We are proud to offer you THE HOLY GRAIL OF Jeep Grand Wagoneers. Ambassador 1987, the last version of the Wagoneer to be ever produced in Mexico by Jeep.
This is a very special piece of history from VAM´s (Vehiculos Automotores Mexicanos) legacy. VAM had produced AMC licensed products in Mexico for many years until 1982, when a very big crisis hit the country and the company. VAM couldn’t survive that crisis, and in the same way as in the United States, Renault would take over the VAM operations in Mexico, the 1983 line up would be the last for the AMC based cars with the main purpose of finishing all the parts inventory. Jeep would have a few years more to live under the Renault direction, but will also meet its faith in 1987 when Renault retired all their investments in North America selling its AMC shares to Chrysler in the United Sates, and closing operations in Mexico. March of 1987 was the las month for Renault Jeep to report sales, this specific Grand Wagoneer Ambassador was sold new on April 1st of 1987.
There is very few information about the Grand Wagoneer Ambassador, but it is clear that it was a commemorative way for the Jeep brand and the Grand Wagoneer nameplate to say goodbye to the Mexican market after many years of great sales. The production numbers are not clear, but various sources states that there were between 12 units and were mostly built to high ranked politicians from Mexico.
The Ambassador version is believed to be the last of the Grand Wagoneer run in Mexico, it was a very luxurious package sporting only four leather/cloth seats, the second row with two captain style individual bucket seats with lots of leg room. Ambassador versions didn’t have the 3rd row seats. In order to enhance the luxurious profile for the Ambassador, a vinyl landau insert was added to the C pilar and rear doors to give privacy to the distinguished rear passengers, while their driver tour them around town. Only black and white Ambassadors are know to be produced, no info on how many of each color, and no woodgrain trim.
Full equipment was standard, including power windows and locks, remote control mirrors, air conditioning and an AM/FM cassette stereo.
The engine is VAM´s 4.6 liter (282 cubic inches) in line six, an exclusive Mexican engineered development for the top line models delivering 132 horsepower and 218 lbs/ft of torque. The transmission is a 3 speed automatic with 4 wheel drive.
This Grand Wagoneer Ambassador is now available for sale in the United States, recently imported and ready to be registered in any state. The vehicle is in very good condition with a few details that can still be improved.
